There was elation for the Red Hawks senior girls’ soccer squad after holding on to a 1-nil win over Campbellford for the A Kawartha Championship in Peterborough.

The Hawks came into the Kawartha playoffs with a 2-1-1 record and had scored 11 goals and allowed only six in four games.

The title game win which came after a 3-1 (Ali Paul Nicole Cox and Abby Gordon) victory over Port Hope to open the single-knockout tournament on Wednesday May 23 at St. Thomas Aquinas wasn’t without challenge.

Klose said the Hawks held off Campbellford and credited backfielder Arden Harrop and goalkeeper Chloe Samson for the 0-0 tie during the game. The go-ahead and eventual game-winning goal Klose said came from the team’s leading scorer from the regular season Natalya Gimon.

“Natalya Gimon took a ball at half weaved her way through the Campbellford midfielders then burst through the [defence] before slamming a shot past the stunned keeper” she wrote.

To advance to the final the Hawks were solid against Port Hope.

Klose said the team were up early with Paul’s goal and then the team went up by two with Gordon striking in the first half. Port Hope answered from a Hawks’ defensive “mishap.”

Despite this push by the Hawks’ opponents Samson was outstanding with great hands but also making several saves on shots just beneath the cross bar. Cox added an insurance goal to secure the win. Like the final Harrop was key as she “was fast and consistent leading the defence.”

The Hawks are scheduled to be hosting the COSSA (Central Ontario Secondary School Associations) championship today (Tuesday) and will be playing at 10 p.m. This is subject to change without notice.
