When it comes to golf Haliburton has great opportunity said Andy MacMillan the new owner for the Haliburton Driving Range.

Since assuming management in April MacMillan has been working towards making the range a destination for golfing enthusiasts and those who just want a good time.

“My goal here is to have a spot not only for guys and girls that are really into golf but kids and people that want to try it and come have some fun. We’re going to update the mini-golf” he said.

MacMillan originally from Peterborough resides here with his wife who is from the Highlands.

The 27-year-old boasts 15 years in the golf industry covering roles that included the minor at the pro shop service and golf course to fitting managing and instruction. He will be selling the full array of golf equipment providing fittings and offering instruction to everyone from the  junior players to the long-time players interested in improving their game.

MacMillan said he has already partnered with the Haliburton Hockey Haven to teach their campers.

Rather than leave town or shop online he said people can buy with confidence from him.

MacMillan is a graduate of the three-year professional golf management diploma program at Georgian College. He has received his card with the PGA of Canada (formerly CPGA) which stipulates he has received training and certification. He has experience as a golf pro at the Club at North Halton golf course in Georgetown Ont. worked for Taylor Made at Glen Abbey Golf Course and their head office in Woodbridge as a custom fitter and was the director of operations for the  GTA Amateur Tour for three years.

Technically he is running his own business at the golfing range (no immediate plans to change the name) and has agreed to lease the 25-acre property a few kilometres out of Haliburton on Gelert Road for the year. He’s thought of changing the business’s name however that is a future consideration.

The season membership has increased to $45 which entitles the pass holder to a bucket of balls per day. The range will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. every day except Wednesday when it will open at 11 a.m. and close at 8 p.m. Signage has been updated and the location will be working on “target greens.”

MacMillan is ready for feedback and appreciates how the community has welcomed him.

“I’m just happy to be welcomed in by the community and really hoping people will enjoy. I’m welcoming any suggestions to things they’d like to see as well” he said.
