As the warm lazy days of summer pass and the first cool breezes of autumn blow 30 artists in 27 studio locations in the Haliburton Highlands start their final frenzy to complete their wonderful art pieces for the 29th Haliburton County Studio Tour. This tour which occurs during the weekends of Oct. 1 and 2 and 8 and 9 features some of the best original works of art anywhere. The artists on the tour have endured a rigorous jurying process to qualify to show and sell their work on the tour and many have had buyers nationally and internationally.
The loon emblem announces the location of each artist and you can be certain that you will find artists demonstrating their specialty and eagerly talking about how they live and work. Often the demonstrations are entertaining spectacles for the visitor. Not only will the process of making art entertain and amaze you but you will also be treated to the culinary abilities of the artists. At every studio wonderful treats await. So pick up a brochure and visit as many studios as you can. Sample the fabulous variety.
Visitors on the tour have the added opportunity to enjoy the breathtaking beauty of the fall season as they drive from studio to studio. The colour changes in the Highlands are spectacular and awe-inspiring as one drives throughout the countryside. At some locations there is also an opportunity to walk pathways and trails to enhance the experience.
We have three new artists on the tour this year and one returning artist. Paul Rolfe who is guest artist at the studio of Marty Gryciuk turns beautiful bowls using the hardwood trees of the Haliburton Highlands. Joyce Ruyers Emmink and Peter Emmink from Ivy Cottage Studio present exciting glass fusion designs are the guests of Susan MacDonald. Shelley van Nood is working with her aunt Helen Newton and produces pieces to enhance her aunt’s displays and showcases her own unique creative skills. Returning to the tour this year is Wendy Wood at her own studio. She produces vibrant acrylic paintings and handwoven traditional textiles all influenced by the travel Wendy has done during the last few years. These are wonderful additions to our tour this year.
The artists on the studio tour would have to admit that the beauty of the Haliburton Highlands is a great influence on their work. The tour offers a welcoming spirit and friendly camaraderie where visitors can chat with the artists learn and appreciate the art and perhaps take home a piece to enjoy.
They share the experience with their friends and marvel at the treasures hidden amongst the dazzling colour of the forest. Join in the excitement the learning and congeniality as you meet the artist and old and new friends.
