Earthquake rumbles county

As if the rains weren’t heavy enough this past week, Haliburton County was shaken up by a minor earthquake on April 14.

The core of the quake hit approximately 59 kilometres east of Pembroke, with reports of it being noticeably felt in Petawawa, Renfrew, Pembroke, and Ottawa. The rumblings hit the scale at a 3.9 magnitude, and occurred at a depth of 13 kilometres, which according to Natural Resources Canada, is deemed a fairly shallow earthquake.

The site noted that magnitudes below 2 generally aren’t felt by humans, but since 2025, Haliburton County has had 27 quakes of magnitudes up to 4.1, including one above 4, one between 3 and 4, one between 2 and 3, and 24 below 2 in the past year.

“While this is considered a minor quake, it is certainly strong enough to be felt by those in close proximity to the epicenter,” shared the Ontario Storm Watch website.

While some local social media users shared that they felt the rumbling in Haliburton County, no damage or injuries were reported.
