Foodies roam the county with Roving Lunch Club

By Jenn Watt

The first Friday of every month dozens of diners descend on restaurants across the county looking to try something new and chat with friends.

The Roving Lunch Club an initiative of Community Support Services picks one venue a month bringing with them between 40 and 80 people.
“The Roving Lunch Club was to tap into another clientele [than Diner’s Club]” says Brigitte Gebauer co-ordinator of volunteer resources. Many of those who attend the lunches are part of the CSS volunteer base.

“We have a lot of people who also … are able to take their neighbours who aren’t as able to get out and about” she says.
Meals are usually between $15 and $25 (including tax and tip) each and include at least three courses with a choice of main dishes.

Last week the club converged on Rhubarb in Carnarvon but they’ve gone to all corners of the county.
Participation is on a first-come first-served basis meaning if you want a seat you need to call CSS ahead of time to reserve your spot.
Besides being a great time with delicious food the Roving Lunch Club also brings exposure to area restaurants.

“I know a lot of people they’ve been to places they’d never been there before and because they went through the Roving Lunch Club they went back” says Gebauer.

Volunteer Fair coming soon
In about two weeks the Haliburton County Volunteer Fair will be happening at the high school in Haliburton. Booths will be set up in the school gym from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday Oct. 17.
The event brings together area organizations looking for volunteers and people looking for a way to give back.
Organizations wanting a booth should give Brigitte Gebauer a call at CSS: 705-457-2941.
Organizers are hoping those planning to attend will call Canoe FM to let them know in order to determine how much food to order. 705-457-1009 (Yes there will be refreshments!)
