Construction on the second phase of Whispering Pines apartments on County Road 21 near Haliburton is underway.

Twelve townhouses will be built using funds from City of Kawartha Lakes Haliburton County and federal and provincial capital funding. The project cost is $3.44 million with Haliburton County contributing $144000. Dysart et al is waiving various fees and conditions in order to assist with the project. It is anticipated the townhouses will be occupied by the spring of 2019.

According to information provided by City of Kawartha Lakes six of the townhouses will have two bedrooms and six will have three bedrooms. They are geared to families and have a range of rent formulas.

“Close to 500 households are waiting in the county for an affordable rental through the central waiting list: 384 households waiting on a one-bedroom unit 58 households waiting for a two-bedroom unit and 48 households who are waiting for a three-bedroom unit” the information sheet reads.

Nearly 50 per cent of tenant households in the county spend 30 per cent or more on shelter costs the information says.

Phase 1 of Whispering Pines included 24 units which were completed in the fall of 2013.
