Letter: Lions toll bridge campaign goes digital

Did you stop at the Haliburton and District Lions toll bridge? Oh you didn’t see it and you want to know where it is? Well it’s 2020 and the Lions are part of the COVID-19 new normal. The toll bridge is online at haliburtonlions.com . That’s right! The Lions annual toll bridge fundraiser has gone virtual.

While our first choice would be to be out there on the August long weekend greeting you at your cars as you drive up Maple Avenue we know that in this most unusual year a live toll bridge is not the way to go. We know that personal safety is so important and we know and agree that social distancing is a must. So we are putting our toll bridge online. You see the needs in our community have not lessened and as a result we are strengthening our commitment to serve.

The Lions raise money to give it away. We support most of the non-profit organizations in our service area which ranges from Stanhope in the west to Cardiff in the east and includes the communities of Stanhope West Guilford Haliburton Wilberforce Harcourt Cardiff and Highland Grove.  We support many different groups from food banks and Food 4 Kids to children’s literacy; from individual welfare needs to arts and culture; from childhood cancer research to vision and hearing; from the environment to diabetes awareness and dog guides; and the list goes on. Our activities fall into two categories: service and fundraising to support those services. The youth of our community are a high priority and much of our work goes to that end.

Putting this all together means we need your help to help others! We need funds!

Go to haliburtonlions.com and click on the Virtual Toll Bridge tab.

The Virtual Lions Toll Bridge starts now and goes to Monday Sept. 7 at noon.

Last year our live Toll Bridge netted over $6000. With your help we will achieve our goal of $7000. Go to haliburtonlions.com and click on the Virtual Toll Bridge tab.
