Organizers of the Apple Sauce Project are once again collecting the county’s apples and making it into sauce. The community initiative takes unused apples from local trees transforms them into sauce freezes it and distributes it to seniors and families in need.
Anyone who wants to donate apples grown locally is asked to get in touch with organizers. They’re also looking for volunteers to pick apples and others to make the sauce.
Donations can be dropped off in Haliburton Village:
SIRCH Central 2 Victoria St. Haliburton (next to the laundromat)
Sept. 18 and 19 between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. 705-457-1742
To volunteer to pick apples during the week of Sept. 17 call and leave a message: Haliburton – Nancy Brownsberger at 705-457-2941 ext. 2926
Volunteers will process the apples into apple sauce on Tuesday Sept. 25 and Wednesday Sept. 26 at the SIRCH Community Kitchen in the village of Haliburton. Contact Jay McIvor at SIRCH Central 705-457-1742 to help.
The apple sauce is distributed with Meals on Wheels SIRCH Frozen Meals and through local food banks.
