St. George’s Anglican Church wanted to support youth of Haliburton County with the proceeds from this year’s barbecue roast beef dinner.

With 138 paying customers and 30 volunteers the event on Sept. 29 raised $3000 which the advisory board decided to divide evenly between Food for Kids and Haliburton County Youth Hub (Youth Wellness Hubs Ontario).

Youth advisors Malia and Joey along with youth engagement staff member Mary Sisson came to St. George’s Church to receive the $1500 cheque on Thursday Oct. 4.

The youth hub representatives said donations are needed for renovations to the space which is the former Lighthouse Church in Haliburton. They need money as well as donations from local contractors or other professionals who could help with revamping the space.

Currently they’re focusing on getting the upstairs space ready which includes accessibility upgrades.

They estimated the flooring alone will cost $10000 between labour and materials.

Young people need a place to go where they can gather and relax said Louise Sisson people’s warden at St. George’s.

“I think it’s important. You need your own space” she said to Malia and Joey.

Aaron Walker community development co-ordinator for Food for Kids said he was happy that his organization had been partnered with the youth hub in this donation. Food for Kids serves a nutritional need while the youth hub will help young people from a social capacity.

The $1500 cheque is the equivalent of one month of food for students at J.D. Hodgson Elementary School he said.
