Alana Bannister back is clinical manager and dental assistant at the Volunteer Dental Outreach. In November she and the staff at VDO were joined by Jennifer Hutnick who came to volunteer. Hutnick is going into dentistry. The VDO has filled the gap in the Highlands for low-income adults who cannot afford going to the dentist. Outside Haliburton County most communities have nothing like VDO prompting the health unit to call on the government to provide coverage for all adults who have low incomes. JENN WATT Staff

This year the Red Hawks track and field team is not sending any representatives to the Ontario Federation of Sports Athletic Associations championship in Windsor.
However the team has no reason to hang their collective heads as there were seven personal bests achieved and one school record set when the team competed at the OFSAA East Regional Track Championships from May 26 to 27 at the Bruce Faulds Track and Field Facility in Belleville.

Senior Hawks athlete Kenndal Marsden finished fifth in the 200 metre dash with a season personal best of 27.11 while junior boy Nolan Flood finished sixth in javelin with a personal best throw of 38.17 metres. Midget boy Shawn Walker ran another personal best in the 800 metre run in 2:13.47 breaking his school record again. Junior boy Sam Longo ran a personal best in the 1500 metre run with 4:36.21 midget boy Coleman Heaven ran a personal best in 300 metre hurdles with 50.57 seconds senior boy Ryan Hill jumped a personal best in long-jump with 5.57 metres and senior girl Shae MacNaull threw a season personal best in javelin with 28.73 metres.

Coach Bruce Griffith wrote in an email “everyone worked extremely hard and had a great time. It was a pleasure to coach this team and I’ll miss it!”
Griffith who is retiring at the conclusion of this year coached for nine years which included 1989 and 1990 and then from 2010 to 2016.
“I will miss the kids and watching the quality of the athleticism. I won’t miss the bus rides!” he said.
