No Haliburton Terry Fox Run again this year

By Darren Lum

For the second consecutive year the Haliburton Terry Fox Run will not be held.

Without a leading coordinator the event continues to be left in a state of suspension until one can come forward.

Terry Fox Foundation’s Ontario community events coordinator Kim Smith hopes the event returns for the 40th anniversary of Terry Fox’s Marathon of Hope.

“Although the Haliburton event is cancelled this year we are seeking a volunteer to chair the Haliburton Terry Fox Run in 2020 as we commemorate the 40th Anniversary of Terry’s Marathon of Hope. In existence since 1982 Haliburton has hosted Terry Fox Runs and contributed over $146000 to cancer research. The Terry Fox Foundation will work closely with the volunteer chair and provide support training and materials to ensure the success of the event” she wrote.

“If you are an enthusiastic and organized individual who possesses exceptional leadership skills and are passionate about making a difference in the world contact us today and join the mission to change lives for the better every day” she wrote.

Volunteers are vital to the Terry Fox runs said Smith.

“Our greatest strength is the extraordinary team of Terry Fox volunteers that span from coast to coast a human chain linked by a common purpose – to make a positive difference in the fight against cancer. They also share many of the attributes Canadians hold most dear: they are dedicated and driven helpful and humble and above all they are caring and compassionate.”

Although the Haliburton event will not run there is still a Haliburton County Terry Fox event to still support and participate in which is held minutes away in Minden on Sunday Sept. 15. This will be volunteer Diane Peacock’s last year organizing after 13 years the event which has run for 26 years.
