The flower baskets are ordered the banners are ready and the Haliburton Village BIA (Business Improvement Area) is set for the busiest season of the year. Welcome back CTTT – Come To Town Tuesdays! The farmers’ market opens on May 17 and we are starting to promote the sales in our stores and the specials in our restaurants.
We are ready for our spring sidewalk sale. Mark June 18 on your calendar! Yes that is the same day as the Rails End Trash and Treasures Marketplace.
Some changes are in the works for our annual BIA fall festival ColourFest. We are excited about a new partnership between the BIA and the Municipality of Dysart et al as this promises to be the beginning of a new era for the festival. Look for a call for people interested in joining the new planning committee and look for a redesigned festival for all ages.
I kept to my promise to get out and about in April and being busy was great; finishing up the month with volunteering at the Lions barbecue at the Fish Hatchery Family Fun Day. May is shaping up to be more of the same. On May 4 the Taoist Tai Chi Open House is taking place at Haliburton United Church. Canoe FM is holding its annual sock hop on May 7 and while arthritis may limit my dancing it won’t curtail my enthusiasm for great ‘50s and ‘60s music. I am thinking of going as a “flower child” from the ‘60s but my white hair just might give me away. Oh well. On May 21 Point in Time Centre for Children Youth and Parents in conjunction with Baked and Battered and the Folk Society is bringing nationally acclaimed singer/songwriter Kate Reid to Haliburton. This is a fundraiser in support of LGBTQ+ Rainbow Youth and will also feature local performers from the Youth Coffee House. Look for the JDH Elementary School fundraiser on May 7 and Food For Kids is having their annual fundraiser on May 28.
Finally I cannot leave May without a little reminiscing and anticipation of “May 24.” The unofficial – official start of summer in cottage country: so many great memories of that first family weekend back to the cottage with the traffic on the 400; then the first view of the lake and the guitars and first campfire of the season. And now well it’s time to welcome back our cottagers and seasonal residents. Your vitality and spirit; your love of the Highlands and our town are always appreciated. Enjoy the month of May.
