Residents in Highlands East will have a choice on who will be their next mayor as a new candidate has entered the race.

Highland Grove resident Cheryl Ellis has filed papers to run against incumbent Dave Burton.
Ellis was born in Bowmanville but has been living on a farm her parents bought in Highland Grove since 1968.

“I continue to live on that same property and I am still trying to be a farmer” she told the paper.
Ellis said she is running to be mayor because she wants to serve the community.

“I want to provide good leadership that will plan and build the future of Highlands East” she said. “I wholeheartily believe I have a contribution to make I have ideas to share a passion that won’t die and a commitment to do the right thing no matter what.”

Some of the projects that Ellis would like to focus on if elected are housing bringing a full-service ATM to the area and providing inexpensive transportation.

“I would like people to know that I am willing and capable of seeing the on-going projects in Highlands East to a successful finish” she said.

“A decade of promises and the cellphone service in Wilberforce is still unreliable. This is a long overdue problem that needs to be rectified immediately.”

Ellis would also like to see improved internet service in the area as well.

She believes there are some good things happening in the community and that local MPP Laurie Scott’s recent cabinet appointment as Minister of Labour is a good news story for the area.

“Laurie Scott understands the job issues we are facing; it is my hope we can think of some innovative ways of seeing funding to invest in our youth.”
