The following are brief reports of items discussed at Highlands East council July 14. Meetings are currently held via video conferencing and viewable on YouTube.

Fires at landfills

The Highlands East fire department responded to two fires at landfills in early July one at the Highway 28 landfill on July 3 and the other at the Bicroft landfill on July 4. The first fire was grass and old timber the second was household garbage. Stewart Hurd environmental supervisor told council during their meeting on July 14 that the cause of the fires is unknown. At the time Haliburton County was under a fire ban and Hurd said attendants had been instructed not to burn brush.

Herlihey Park update

A report from CAO Shannon Hunter indicates work may soon begin on Herlihey Park. In her CAO’s report she wrote that she and Mayor Dave Burton have been meeting with North Design Office Inc the landscape architect about the park which is to be along Dark Lake in Wilberforce. Feedback on construction drawings has been gathered from the county’s accessibility committee and was given to North Design Office she said. “We are hopeful that work will commence soon” Hunter wrote.
